180’ Three-Leg Comms Tower

Project Story
This project was unique in that the client wanted to reuse an existing tower that was in their inventory. The legs are plate steel bent to a 300 degree outside radius to facilitate the bolting of bracing directly to the legs without needing gusset connector plates. MCE analyzed the tower for site-specific wind and seismic forces and designed a deep foundation since it was sited on soft soils. The foundation consisted of nine helical soil anchors that went 40 feet deep. These anchors provided the foundation to resist uplift and compression for each of the three legs. Concrete pile caps were cast over the anchor shafts and tied together with concrete grade beams.
