Smith Rock Pedestrian Bridge
Project Details
Project Story
The Smith Rock Pedestrian Bridge provides visitor access over the Crooked River to thousands of rock climbing routes and miles of hiking/mountain biking trails. The new bridge spans 106 feet and replaced an existing bridge that stood for almost 50 years. At 8 feet wide, 3 feet wider than the old bridge, the new bridge also allows for small park maintenance vehicles to cross. The bridge was designed with three tapered glulam girders which are over 5 1/2 feet tall at mid span. Each end of the bridge is supported by new concrete abutments and retaining walls to account for the wider approaches. Fifteen micropiles support each abutment to resist the vertical and lateral forces of the bridge. As one of the premier rock climbing destinations in the world, the new pedestrian bridge aims to serve people travelling to this iconic destination for years to come.
