Old Oregon Hotel Renovation

ACEC Oregon · 2001

Award Overview

Story

Old Oregon Hotel Renovation
Miller Consulting Engineers provided structural engineering design and construction services for the renovation, restoration, and seismic upgrade of the historic Old Oregon Hotel, a four-story brick landmark in downtown McMinnville. The project required extensive structural modifications to accommodate an additional floor, a new elevator, and modern building code requirements while preserving the building’s historic character and ensuring that new structural elements remained virtually invisible to occupants and visitors.

The award-winning retrofit involved detailed analysis of the existing unreinforced masonry structure and the design of a concealed seismic strengthening system incorporating plywood shear walls, CMU shear walls, steel framing, and braced frames. By integrating modern seismic performance standards within the constraints of a historic building, MCE successfully enhanced life safety, preserved the architectural integrity of the hotel, and supported its continued use as a vibrant community destination.
