Award Overview
Story
Miller Consulting Engineers provided structural engineering services for this five-level, 330,000-square-foot parking garage serving 1,245 vehicles. Located adjacent to the Willamette River and constructed below the floodplain, the project required innovative solutions to address seismic liquefaction, lateral spread, hydrostatic uplift, and long-span parking requirements.
MCE evaluated multiple structural systems to identify the most effective balance of performance and cost, ultimately designing a cast-in-place post-tensioned concrete structure supported by vibro-replacement stone columns. The resulting design maximized parking efficiency through column-free parking areas, eliminated the need for expansion joints, reduced long-term maintenance requirements, and delivered a durable, resilient structure capable of meeting challenging site and environmental conditions. The project was recognized with an Excellence in Structural Engineering Award.
