Project of the Year

Mariposa Community Causeway

American Public Works Association (Oregon) · 2026

Award Overview

Story

Mariposa Community Causeway
The Mariposa Causeway connects Mariposa Community Park to approximately one mile of existing trails along the Tualatin River floodplain and riparian corridor. Developed through a collaborative effort between the City of Cornelius, AKS, and Miller Consulting Engineers (MCE), the project features a 290-foot-long, 10-foot-wide elevated pathway that provides access through the natural landscape while accommodating the surrounding floodplain environment.

MCE provided structural engineering design for the elevated boardwalk, incorporating panelized framing sections to streamline field assembly and support efficient construction. The design team delivered a coordinated solution that balances structural performance, constructability, and access to the area's natural resources.

With a total design, permitting, and construction cost of approximately $1.5 million, the Mariposa Causeway enhances community connectivity and expands recreational access to the Tualatin River corridor.
