soil nail walls

Patient Parking Garage for Portland VA Medical Center, Portland, Oregon

This project was completed using the design-build process where MCE served as structural engineer of record working closely with the design and construction team to ensure a high performance building was achieved at an affordable cost.

The structure was designed to accommodate future vertical expansion of the garage as parking needs changed. The structure was designed to accommodate two additional levels of parking to create a six-level, 145,000-square-foot building.

Built into a steep hillside, the design called for a unique foundation and earth retention system consisting of drilled piers, soil nail walls, and hybrid tieback soldier pile walls. The seismic load-resisting- system utilized steel buckling and restrained braced frames to provide predictable seismic performance and reduce the seismic loading to the foundation system.

Due to the exposure of the structure to the elements, MCE proposed unique concrete mix designs using shrinkage-compensating cement to reduce the amount of cracking in the concrete slab and to provide prolonged durability of the slab.
