MCE performed a seismic evaluation and field surveys of treatment buildings and equipment as well as a seismic analysis of treatment facilities, recommendations for strengthening, and cost estimates. Several areas of particular concern were the chlorine storage building which contained hazardous materials and a blower building containing air handling equipment with a replacement cost of over $3 million. Special dynamic design considerations were required for process piping, mechanical equipment, and a co-generation building.
This project demonstrates MCE’s understanding of seismic issues relating to “lifeline” structures and the special dynamic properties of process piping, electrical, and mechanical equipment. Special considerations were taken into account for critical or hazardous portions of the treatment facility. In these areas the structures were seismically upgraded to exceed the code allowed minimums to meet the operation and safety needs of our client.
